#original_high_speech Hello, folks! Here I am with another piece of exquisite language for you. This exctract from the novel 'Dream Quest of the Unknown Kadath' by Howard P. Lovecraft comes from its closing scene whereby the protagonist reaches the end point of his quest. And there he goes into parlery with an mystical entity, a Great Old One if truth be told. This whole piece preludes the summit of the whole adventure of Randolph Carter's, and the language does match it with a rise in grandness of expression. So I am sure you will admire its grandiosity and finesse. Enjoy the read! Supportive glossary: 🔹 betwixt — между 🔹 prismatic — призматический 🔹 robe — одеяние 🔹 pshent — пшент (корона древнеегипетских фараонов) 🔹 regal — цартсвенный 🔹 swart — смуглый 🔹 languid — томный 🔹 capricious — своенравный 🔹 mellow — бархатистый 🔹 to grunt — ворчать 🔹 to tumble — катиться кубарем 🔹 to brood — задумчиво размышлять 🔹 waste — пустошь 🔹 dreamland — край грёз 🔹 reverence — благоговение 🔹 covetousness — вожделение 🔹 henceforward — впредь 🔹 abode — жилище Then down the wide lane betwixt the two columns a lone figure strode; a tall, slim figure with the young face of an antique Pharaoh, gay with prismatic robes and crowned with a golden pshent that glowed with inherent light. Close up to Carter strode that regal figure; whose proud carriage and swart features had in them the fascination of a dark god or fallen archangel, and around whose eyes there lurked the languid sparkle of capricious humour. It spoke, and in its mellow tones there rippled the mild music of Lethean streams. “Randolph Carter,” said the voice, “you have come to see the Great Ones whom it is unlawful for men to see. Watchers have spoken of this thing, and the Other Gods have grunted as they rolled and tumbled mindlessly to the sound of thin flutes in the black ultimate void where broods the daemon-sultan whose name no lips dare speak aloud. “When Barzai the Wise climbed Hatheg-Kla to see the Great Ones dance and howl above the clouds in the moonlight he never returned. The Other Gods were there, and they did what was expected. Zenig of Aphorat sought to reach unknown Kadath in the cold waste, and his skull is now set in a ring on the little finger of one whom I need not name. “But you, Randolph Carter, have braved all things of earth’s dreamland, and burn still with the flame of quest. You came not as one curious, but as one seeking his due, nor have you failed ever in reverence toward the mild gods of earth. Yet have these gods kept you from the marvellous sunset city of your dreams, and wholly through their own small covetousness; for verily, they craved the weird loveliness of that which your fancy had fashioned, and vowed that henceforward no other spot should be their abode.

#sticky_and_tricky Outside vs. Outside of In this post that concludes 2025 on this channel, I want to clarify some subtle differences in the meaning of the adverb outside and the compound preposition outside of. 1) Outside The adverb outside is an adverb of place, i. e. it indicates a physical position or physical space . Examples: ▫️ Charlie went outside at midnight and came home at sunrise, pleasantly tired. ▫️ Emily was waiting for the courier outside the bank to pick up the delivery. ▫️ Peter parked his bicycle outside the workshop. 2) Outside of Outside of is mainly used in colloquial speech and, as dictionaries suggest, more in American English than British English . And it is a compound preposition that has a similar meaning to except for , apart from. Examples: ▫️ Outside of Lamborghinis and Ferraris for spicy rides, James May probably loves Rolls-Royces and Bentleys for leisurely outings. ▫️ When she was a child, Mary wanted to become a long-distance runner outside of a biology scientist, a ballet dancer and a footballer. Colclusion It turns out that the difference between outside as an adverb and outside of is pretty straightforward although it might seem rather subtle at first glance. Outside relates to physical spaces and physical positions whereas outside of is used to specify and distinguish one or several objects from other objects of a similar class. And before I end this post, I want to wish you to stick to things and activities that you like and enjoy and to what makes you feel better in 2026. Briefly speaking, do not forget to enjoy yourself! Happy New Year, everybody! 🎄
#heed_and_hear Hello, learners, readers and listeners alike! Here I am with another audio piece to train your listening skills, an episode of 'A Point of View' aired on BBC Radio 4. In this episode, Irish writer Megan Nolan recalls several incidents of animal escapes from zoos and other confined spaces over the last century or so that caught the public eye. She reflects on the reasons why animal escapes often stir something in the collective human psyche, and she presumes that it is the act of liberation and breaking of the mundane, routine order of things. The writer also shares her view of the world through the lens of existentialism and the liberating sensation of escape and reveals the influece of existentialist ideas on the formation of her personality in her adolescence. She goes on to confess that she would never exchange the reality as is, albeit harsh and painful every now and then, for a false, enjoyable one. As to the actual phonetic aspect of the episode, I have gained some new knowledge regarding the hallmarks of the Irish accent. It has turned out that the Irish tend to reduce the vowels, accented and non-accented ones, and some consonants too. Sometimes they do it to the point of almost complete elision, which may severely hamper auditory perception for those unaccustomed to the Irish accent. So it was in my case: the words and phrases our (0:37), outing (3:05), owl (6:14) life's definitive second acts (6:29), Upper East side (6:42), knowledge (7:57), enlightening (8:24) turned out to be difficult to make out for me to the point that I even had to ask artificial intelligence for help in a few cases. And I hope that I eventually got flock of the Elm correctly. If you confront similar problems, you should probably try to figure out the words based on the surrounding context rather than what you hear. You can find this episode of 'A Point of View' here . #original_high_speech Here I hail thee with another exquisite sample of grandiose language of Howard P. Lovecraft so may thou indulge yourself in the graceful majesty of his eloquent words! I am continuing to explore the language of 'Dream Quest of Unnknown Kadath' by Howard P. Lovecraft, which I srarted doing earlier . This novella of his does somewhat stand out from the classic universe of The Great Old Ones, but the language is quite worth paying some extra attention to if you want to add some elegant variation to your own command of English. N.B.: If you find the extract itself not challenging enough, you can go one step further and try to learn it by heart. And before you proceed to the reading, here is a glossary to help you along the way as per standard proceedings. Atal, seated on an ivory dais in a festooned shrine at the top of the temple, was fully three centuries old; but still very keen of mind and memory. From him Carter learned many things about the gods, but mainly that they are indeed only earth’s gods, ruling feebly our own dreamland and having no power or habitation elsewhere. They might, Atal said, heed a man’s prayer if in good humour; but one must not think of climbing to their onyx stronghold atop Kadath in the cold waste. It was lucky that no man knew where Kadath towers, for the fruits of ascending it would be very grave. Atal’s companion Barzai the Wise had been drawn screaming into the sky for climbing merely the known peak of Hatheg-Kla. With unknown Kadath, if ever found, matters would be much worse; for although earth’s gods may sometimes be surpassed by a wise mortal, they are protected by the Other Gods from Outside, whom it is better not to discuss. At least twice in the world’s history the Other Gods set their seal upon earth’s primal granite; once in antediluvian times, as guessed from a drawing in those parts of the Pnakotic Manuscripts too ancient to be read, and once on Hatheg-Kla when Barzai the Wise tried to see earth’s gods dancing by moonlight. So, Atal said, it would be much better to let all gods alone except in tactful prayers.
